Hello, I’m Dawson!

I'm an illustrator and artist currently living in Central Texas. As a naturalist, I enjoy drawing the many critters with which we share ecosystems. I believe representing both extant and extinct animals through various media allows for a greater appreciation for biodiversity.

As well as a recreational artist, I am an undergraduate student studying wildlife biology at Texas State University. My desire to learn about and advocate for wildlife connects me to the land I stand on. I advocate for birds and avifauna through both the Travis County Audubon and National Audubon societies. I advocate for dark skies through the Texas and International Dark Sky Association(s), protecting wildlife and the intrinsic desire to gaze at the night sky.

My medium is mostly pen on paper, coupled with a recent expansion into colored pencil. My ink drawings utilize cross-hatch/ fine line depictions of fur, feathers, landscapes, etc. Color pencil depictions are more concerned with value and texture rather than photographic parallels, allowing the viewer to ‘feel’ the subject's color rather than view it.

The hundreds of hours spent illustrating birds, dinosaurs, mammals, and more helped me to appreciate how connected and complex life is on Earth. I hope to inspire those same thoughts through my work.

Finally, thank you, the viewer, for providing an audience for which I can share my passion!
