Pyrrhuloxia (2024)
Colored Pencil on Paper, 9” x 12” (22.86 x 30.48 cm)
Species featured: Pyrrhuloxia (Cardinalis sinuatus)
Inspired by my frequent trips to the Big Bend region of Texas, Pyrrhuloxia, sometimes called the Desert Cardinal, is the tough cousin of the widespread Northern Cardinal. This flashy bird inhabits the deserts of the American Southwest, including the northern reaches of the diverse Chihuahuan Desert, where the Big Bend is located.
