Colima Warbler & Varied Bunting (2026)

Colored Pencil on Paper, 9” x 12” (22.86 x 30.48 cm)

Species featured: Colima Warbler (Leiothlypis crissaus), Varied Bunting (Passerina versicolor)

The second installment of my Iconic Birds of Big Bend National Park features two passerines found almost exclusively in the park.

The Colima Warbler is widely considered an icon of the park. Its only known presence in the United States is in the high elevation montane woodlands of the Chisos. The bright blue and purple Varied Bunting, however, is more commonly spotted in desert washes and arroyos where plants sprout as a result of summer monsoons.
