Iconic Hummingbirds of Big Bend NP (2026)

Colored Pencil on Paper, 9” x 12” (22.86 x 30.48 cm)

Species featured: Broad-tailed Hummingbird (Selasphorus platycercus), Black-chinned Hummingbird (Archilochus alexandri), Lucifer Hummingbird (Calothorax lucifer), and the Rufous Hummingbird (Selasphorus rufus)

The first set of avian taxa featured in my Iconic Birds of Big Bend National Park exhibited four hummingbirds, mostly known from the park’s varied landscapes.

The Broad-tailed Hummingbird is a high-elevation specialist often found in the woodlands of the Chisos Mountains. An iconic symbol of West Texas, the Black-chinned Hummingbird can be spotted in a variety of xeric (desert-like) environments. A sky island specialist, the Lucifer Hummingbird only breeds in the high altitude regions of Big Bend NP. Canyon foothills rich in agave and desert flowers provide food for this little bird. Last, the Rufous Hummingbird is a long-distance migrant that can be found in the park during the warm months. Like many hummingbirds, these impressive critters can be found in wooded environments.
