Lechuguilla (2025)

Colored Pencil on Recycled Bristol, 9” x 12” (22.86 x 30.48 cm)

Species featured: Lechuguilla (Agave lechuguilla)

The agave known as Lechuguilla is an indicator plant of the Chihuahuan Desert, the only place where it can be found. The plant may flower only once during the period of 3 to 21 years of age, after which it will die. Lechuguilla has served the native peoples of Mexico and the Southwestern US for centuries. Its strong fibers in the leaves and water stored in the stalk offer a variety of uses. The Javelina (Collared Peccary) primarily features Lechuguilla in its diet, and many species of bats and birds have been observed pollinating the plant’s flowers.
