The Aoudad, also known as the Barbary Sheep, is a large ungulate native to the dry mountains of Northern Africa. Introduced to the United States in the 1940’s to serve closed-fence hunting needs, escaped Barbary Sheep began to threaten both Mule Deer and Bighorn Sheep, competing for food and habitat. Today, hunting remains the most popular means of controlling these invasive herd populations in regions across Texas, New Mexico, and California.
The original artwork now belongs to a private collection.
*The Aoudad (Barbary Sheep) is not native to North America, but has been placed in this collection due to its position as a popular game animal in North America.
